One of the first projects by Soroptimist in 1921 was the 'Save the Redwoods' ' the great ancient trees which were being felled. They lobbied the legislature, took on powerful lumber companies, and won the support of the public. Today nearly 100 years later at the launch of the 21st Soroptimist Convention, Soroptimists planted rainforest trees in a reforestoration area of Kuala Lumpur.
The theme "Green our Planet - Cool our Climate" . This took place at Taman Tugu. The Taman Tugu Project is a not-for-profit corporate social responsibility (“CSR”) initiative led by Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”) with the support of various public sector agencies, private sector companies, and civil-society organisations.
To commerate SISWP hosting the 21st Soroptimist Convention in Kuala Lumpur, SISWP Representatives along with Soroptimist International President Mariet Verhoef-Cohen and Immediate Past President Yvonne Simpson planted a two 10 metre high rainforest trees.
SISWP President Anusha Santhirasthipam nominated 5 Soroptimists from South West Pacific Immediate Past President Theresa Lyford, President Elect Suman Lata Lal, President Elect Elect Christine Johnstone, National Representative Fiji Veena Sharma and Finance Director Wendy Logan.
President Anusha Santhirasthipam shared this with us "In ancient times thousands of years ago when all societies and cultures were Matriachal and women were leaders of communities a combination of 5 or 7 or 9 women was deemed supremely powerful and invincible to bring about peace, harmony, abundance and prosperity. The number represents Mastery of the 5 elemens of Planets and what is contained in our human body and spirit, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.
